SOCIETY NEWS.

On Monday evening the Kahanga Club held its weekly meeting, and this time in Mrs Sise's house, Queen street. In spite of the cold, wet weather quite a goodly number of members put in an appearance, and they were rewarded with a very pleasant eveningr Miss Reynolds was chairwoman, and a very successful programme had been prepared. The musical items were songs given by Mrs A: Ferguson an£ Miss Lulu Roberts, and piano pieces by Miss Vida Reynolds and Miss Gwendoline Koberts. A very interesting recitation from Dickens was given by Miss Oumine, a clever little dialogue between Miss Ke'nyon and Miss Hodgkins, also another dialogue called " A Friend in Need" between the Misses Rattray, those items concluding the programme for that evening, Mrs Sise wore black, Miss Sise light tan cloth (tailor made), and her sisters tweed costumes ; Mrs Sinclair Thomson, pale grey with large sleeves composed of gauze of the same colour ; the Misses Roberts wore black with eilk bodices; Mrs Postlethwaite, black trimmed with bands of yellow and black insertion ; Miss L. M'Lar a, black with blouse bodice of blue shot eilk; Miss E. M'Laren's blouse was composed of red silk ; Mrs Boyd, black trimmed with pink, veiled in black ; Miss Stanford, black with 'pale blue bodice; Miss Neill, pale heliotrope trimmed with violet velvet ; Mrs Ferguson, black with yellow vest, veiled in black. The weather was so disagreeable that the greater number wore their walking costumes, not many being willirg to ran tbe risk of getting cold and wet.

On llonday, the 18tb, the evening will be spent at Mrs H. Mackenzie's house in High street, and Mrs Lindo Ferguson will be chairwoman.

On Tuesday Mrs Jowitt invited about 100 ladies to afternoon tea at her residence, Maori Hill. The rooms were crowded, but being spacious, and an outlet being formed by tbe ball between the rooms, there seemed always ample accommodation for all. On Wednesday evening a large euchre party was given by Mrs Arthur Fulton and Mrs Stock, and was held at Mrs Fulton's house in Lees street. About 40 guests were present, all of whom took part in the games, which went on at nine tables, during two hours, and at the conclusion prizes were awarded to the lady and gentleman who had won the greatest number of games and to those who had won the fewest number. The recipients were — Miss Ziele, Mrs Finch, Mr Hendrle, and Mr Robinson. Later on there was music and dancing, which was kept up till about 2 o'clock. Mr Stock sang a song 1 , Mrs Stock playing the accompaniment, and Miss Ziele sang the now favourite song of "Bubbles," all heartily joining in the chorus. Mrs Fulton looked very well wearing white silk and lace ; Mrs Stock wore plum-coloured merveilleux, the bodice trimmed with handsome lace ; Mies Wieber, pink with deep crimson velvet trimmings ; Mrs Fincb, a braided gown of black velvet, the bodice trimmed with lace; Mrs Jeffcoat, handsome black and yellow costume ; Miss Stephenson, heliotrope striped gauze; Miss Grumitt (Oamaru), pale blue crepon ; Mrs Kennedy, black ; Mrs Jowitt, pale pink surah ; Miss L.Roberts, yellow silk ; Miss Scott, black. There ' were also present— Mr Williams, Mr Kennedy, Mr Jowitt, Mr Park, Dr Jeffcoat, Mr Tapley, Mr Stock, Mr Finch, Mr Robinsod, Mr Hendrie, Mr O. Rattray, &c. On Friday evening Mrs Downie Stewart gave a large and most) successful juvenile party, which was' held In St. Paul's schoolroom. .
