Useful Employment for Our Young People. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — I shou'd like to suggest a way by which the above might in a measure be provided. As a grower of black currants, I find that there is a good market for this fruit at the fruit-pre-serving factories in Dunedin. The neighbourhood of Dunedin is well suited for their growth.. In their production it is not advisable for any one person to have very large quantities, as they must be gathered in about a fortnight ; but it would suit a number of people to grow small lots, and the gathering comes during the school holidays. Apart: from any profit, the training it would afford wo^d be of great value, fitting many of our young people for settling in the centre of Otago. My suggestion is that a number of people in the neighbourhood of Dunedin might plant from a few dozen to a few hundred bushes in their own gardens, which in the course of a season or two would begin to yield some return and be giving a useful training. Making a start by obtaining a small stock of a good variety, they might easily be increased at no further cost. What I have said applies also to raspberries. It should be taken in hand at once, as the bushes should be planted by the middle of August. lam willing to give information as to planting, &c. Hoping you will consider this suggestion of sufficient importance for insertion in your columns, — I am, &c, William Ings. . • Caversham, June 20.
