SPRINGHILLS.
Juxe 12.— The Southland Celtic Fociety held a meeting at Brown's Hotel, Gap, last Thursday. The president failed to appear, but when it was known he would have had to come through the SpriDghills roadhis absence caused no surprise. Mr A. Chisholm was voted to the chair. The secretary was directed to procure a copy of the Dunedin Society's rules. Mr Thomas M'Lean having kindly given a site for a public hall, it was decided to discuss the matter fully at the next meeting. Songs were sung by Messrs Christopher, John, A. A. M'Rae, and A. M'Donald. Great enthusiasm was displayed. Messrs A. A. M'Eae and M'Donald were the life of the meeting, and their original songs were especially well received. En passant I may remark that the secre-
tary had left his horse three miles from the Gap on the Springhills road, and had walked through the paddocks. Other members present from this district had ridden off while, the road was frozen* and they were not expected home till the next hard frost. I notice that visitors generally linger in this district, those who come in daisy carts especially ; but that has nothing to do with the Celtic Society. Entertainments. — The miners' entertainment was very creditable to the vocal and histrionic powers- of the performers. Mr Raruago performed several sleight-of'hand tricks with great effect, fairly mystifying the audience by his deft in manipulation. The Black Diamond Minstrels gave solos, choruses, and conundrums. A danco followed, and in the early morning all wont home through the Springhills road, realising that the fun was finished and life was very real and earnest.
