Whom Did She Sick?

A gentleman took a friend home to lunch without notice to his wife. She called him aside and explained that they were out of sherry, and that, when the visitor had exhausted what was in the decanter — a couple of glasses — he must not be asked to take more. All this the husband promised to remember, and immediately forgot. When his friend had finished the sherry, the host asked him to take some more. The wife looked distressed and the visitor declined. The host insisted that he should have another glass. The wife looked as if she were in agony, and the friend firmly refused to allow his host to fetch another bottle from the cellar. Later the wife said reproachfully to her husband : " How could you urge him to have more cherry, when I explained to you that there wasn't another bottle in the house ? "

'• t am 1 very sorry, my deaf/ said the patient husband, " but I forgot all about it.'' "Well," retorted' she, "what did you ottppose I was kicking you' under the table for?" "But you' didn't kick mo!" said th 6 hxtsband.
