FIXTURES.

February 17, 1894.— N.Z.A.A. Annual Championship meeting, at Dunedin.

NOTES BY AMATEUR.

The ohamplonship meeting — the all-absorb-ing theme of conversation among athletes throughout the colony for some time past — takes place on the Carisbrook ground, Dunedin, on Saturday, and before I can again write in this column the results will have been published in the daily press, and the names of those entitled to the honourable distinction of "champion" will be known all over New Zealand. Although at a disadvantage in not knowing the form of most of the visiting competitors — only two, Creamer and Roberts (Auckland), having arrived at time of going to press — I will endeavour to give an idea as to how the results will in my estimation pan out : — For the lOOvds I place J. 11. Hempton 1, H. M. Reeves 2, and P. J. Nathan 3. 250 yds.— Hempton 1, Reeves 2, G. Strachan 3. 4 10yds.— Reeves 1, W. A. Low 2. N. L. Gurr 3. BSOYDS —Low 1, Gurr 2, Fitzpatrick 3. One Mile.— J. S- Bain 1, G. Turton 2, C. D. Morpeth 3.. One-mile Walk.— A. Findlay 1, f). Galloway 2, A. Bain, Juu./Jt. Three-mile Walk.— Galloway 1, Findlay 2, Bain 3. 120 yds Hurdles.— W. W. Batger 1, J. Moir 2, T. Roberts 3. 440xds Hurdles.— Batger 1, Roberts 2, J. T, Pram 3, Long Jump.— V. E. Gaudin 1, T. F. Upfill 2, Batger 3. High Jump.— Moir 1, Upfill 2. W. Mendelson 3 Pole Jump.— H. L. Kingsley 1, H, Smeaton 2, J. T. Pram 3. ' Weigut-hui'ting.— R. Martin 1, J. F. Wachsmann 2, P. Doull 3. Throwing Hammer.— Martin 1, Doull 2, \Vachsmann 3. On the above reckoning the points scored for the championship banner by the different clubs will come out as follows : — Points. Dunedin 50. Wellington „, M . ... s§ Canterbury '. ... 24 Auckland 15 Although I may be a bit sanguine in toy estimation of the Dunedin men, I think the above tips will be found to be not far out on the day of reckoning, a.nd that the Dunedin Club will wig the banner J ha. ye little dqubt, although

ewer points than those mentioned may do the trick. One of the Canterbury writers expects that Reeves will be the only winner in the team sent down by the C.A.A.C., and that competitor is himself sanguine of doing a good performance or two. Those who were present at the Championship meeting on the Caledonian ground in 1889 will remember what a splendid finish he made in the 440 yds race, and over that distance and in the 250 yds event he may be expected to be, if not first, very close up on this day week. He ran a trial quarter-mile at Lancaster Park on Wednesday night last in 51 4-ssec, which is a tick better than the standard for the distance. The following notes respecting the other Canterbury representatives for the running events are by "Sprinter" in the Canterbury Times: — "The general opinion at Lancaster Park is that Robinson is running better just now than he has ever done previously. _ Broad is in strict training at Ashburton, and is a certain starter in the 100 yds and 250 yds at the Championship meeting. I hear that Fitzpatrick has been a sufferer from the prevailing epidemic of influenza. He is, however, in strong work again. Leversedge won the Three-mile Race at Lancaster Park on Monday night. The time was ridiculously slow, but a heavy northeasterly wind blowing at the time must have mide it about a minute slower than it would have been on a fine day." The Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club have not hitherto supplied their representatives at Championship meetings with colours, but, under a by-law which was adopted some years ago, that is now changed, and each member of the team chosen to represent the local club is to be presented with a cap of the club's colours — cardinal and white. The manufacture of the caps has been completed, and they were on view during the week in the window of Messrs Bloxham and Dawson, in Princes street. At a meeting last Thursday night of the committee of the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club the officials for the championship meeting on the 17th inst. were appointed. It was decided to engage the steamer Tarewai for the 18th inst., in order to give the visiting competitors a water picnic on that date. The question of the suppression of betting at the Championship meeting was again considered, and it was resolved to interview the inspector of police on the subject. It was decided to secure the services of the Kaikorai Band to play at the meeting. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the secretary of the Ravensbourne Regatta expressing a hope that the latter would not be allowed to clash with the athletic gathering on Saturday week. A Reception Committee was appointed to meet visiting competitors. It was agreed to ask Mrs Roberts, wife of the president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, to present the trophies to the successful competitors at the close of the sports. A Christchurch telegram states that Martin (of Auckland) was omitted from the entries for the Championship meeting in the 120 yds and 440 yds Hurdles. Mr H. D. Bell, M.H.R , of Wellington, having intimated that he will be unable to attend the Championship meeting, at which he was to act as a judge of field events, Dr Jeffcoat and Mr J. Allen, M.H.R., have been appointed by the D.A A.C. to judge these events. Roberts and Creamer, the Auckland competitors, who have already arrived in Dunedin, were training on the Carisbrook ground the other evening. The former went over the hurdles in a way that showed him to be a clever fencer, his jumps being low and neat, while slow walking exercise was indulged in by Creamer, who has a long stride, but finds that a cinder ttaeV does not suit him. The Dunedin competitors were nearly a,U OU £ on the ground on Friday night, Low ran V, a if a mile in capital style, and Turton showf J( j gOO< j form over a somewhat longer distance. • r o _ g B am and Crawshaw both sprinted, and Haynes M'Millan, and Duncan, had serviceable exercise.' Smeaton and Pram, the vaulting representatives were both practising. Of th« walkers, Findlay did fast short work, while Galloway, who is training on the Caledonian ground, is in good form.

It appears that the absence from the list of entries of the name of W. M. West (Canterbury), the pole champion, was due to an uncertainty as to whether it would be passible for him to attend the meeting. It was ascertained on Saturday last that he could obtain the necessary leave, and thereupon ths secretary of the D.A.A.C. was asked to wire whether the entry would be accepted. The reply was to the effect that that functionary deolined to accept any responsibility in the matter, though, if the secretary of the association aocepted the entry, he would include West's name in the programme. Since then the Wellington and Auckland Clubs have been desired by the association at Qhristchurch to say whether they had any objection to West competing The secretary of the D.A.A.C. reported the matter to his committee last Monday.when it was pointed out that if an entry made four days late were accepted on this oocasion it would— the principle haviDg heen once admitted of receiving post entries for Championship events— be difficult to know where to draw the line, and eventually the following resolution was oarried:— "That the committee, having carefully considered the question of Mr West's entry for the Pole Jump, think it highly undesirable to establish the precedent of accepting entries after the date specified in the conditions for holding Championship meetings, and on this ground the committee protest against the acceptance of this entry." I have since learned from a Wellington tele* gram that the Wellington A.A.A. strongly oppose West's entry being received. At the annual general meeting, of the Oamaru Amateur Athletic Club, Dr Garland (vice-president) in the chair, the secretary (Mr W. F. Cork) read the committee's report, which was to the effect that the club was in a pretty bad state, and it wa9 suggested that overtures should be made to the Kurow Club with a view of amalgamating with that body. The balance sheet showed the club to be in debt to the extent of £1 6s, but some subscriptions had to be paid. Mr Skeet, in order to test the feeling of the meeting, moved the following resolution — "That a oommittee consisting of Messrs Cork, Harvey, and Mitchell be appointed to negotiate with the Kurow Amateur Athletic Club for the purpose of amalgamating the Oamaru Amateur Athletic Club and Kurow Amateur Athletic Club and form a stronger club, and with powar tp act if negotiations were successful." Seconded by M_r Bjrodje, and carried. Mr Harvey moved that this meeting stand adjourned sine die pending the report of the committee appointed, notice of meeting to Ua given when negotiations concluded. Seconded by Mr Roll, and carried, The officials appointed by the association and the local club for the championship meeting are :— Committee of Management — Dr Roberts, Messrs J. F. Grieifson, O. B.
