THE CANTERBURY MATCH.

First Day — Friday. The match Auckland v. Canterbury was commenced to-day at Lancaster Park. The weather was fine and the wicket perfect. Auckland won the toss and went to the wickets, but despite a good start were all out for 157, of which Mills scored 61 by very attractive cricket. He gave a chance or two in the field, but played well all round. Moresby hit up 21 very rapidly, and Fowke was battiDg three hours for 19 runs, being finally not out. He received severe injuries to his hands while batting, and was unable to play for the remainder of the afternoon. Robertson's bowling for Canterbury was highly successful, and considering the perfect state of the wicket his figures of eight for 60 point to a remarkably good performance. Canterbury commenced batting at 3.15 p.m., and before the drawing of the stumps at 6.30 had broken all New Zealand records in matches of this sort. Three hundred was on the board without the loss of a wicket when the last over was started, butvoff the second ball of that over Cuff was stumped after playing, magnificent cricket for 176. Lawrence, who partnered him from the start, took in his bat for 123, the score sheet showing 306 for the loss of one wicket. The Auckland bowling was severely handled despite numerous changes. Cuff gave a chance at the wickets when he had scored 37, but this was the only opportunity either of the batsmen afforded, and their display received the highest praise. Second Day— Saturday. The Canterbury team, 'with 306 rurs to their credit for the loss of one wicket, resumed their first innings. Lawrence took his score to 167 before he was disposed of. At 12.5 ..the Canterbury total was 400 for the loss of five wickets, and the innings was then declared closed. Auckland commenced their Becond innings 243 runs to the bad, but were unable to make a stand against tbe bowling of Robertson and Labatt, the last wicket falling for 87, of which Kallander made 33 by fine, clean hitting.
