Some excellent contributions are appearing in the local press in support of the abolition of party government, and the movement seems likely to catch on. { »ET, BRACKEN. Mr Thomas Bracken is to be appointed registrar of -electors for Wellington, at a salary of £150 a-year. THE LAND TAX. The total amount of land tax collected in New Zealand this month was £271,000. I learn that payments were made exceedingly well. GOLD QUARTZ. The Wairarapa Star states that artesian well borers at Mr Bidwell's new homestead at the Lower Valley, Wairarapa, brought up a quantity, of different coloured gold quartz from 65ft below the surface, December 29. DEMAND FOR LANt». The Land Office has been thronged during the la&t two days with applicants for a number of forfeited sections of land on the East and West Coasts, which have been put up for ballot. HEROISM OF A MOTHER. At the inquest on Mrs Sullivan, who died from the effects of injuries received in a fire which occurred in her dwelling house, Upper Hutt, the evidence showed that she had sacrificed herself to save her children, whom she carried out while her clothes were on fire. She was burned In some places to the bone. BONUS FOR GLASS BOTTLES. The Government offer a bonus of 10s per gross up to 750 gross for the manufacture of glass bottles in the colony, at prices ranging from 16s per gross for half-pint sauce bottles to 22a 6d per gross for sodawater bottles. A PROFITABLE MINE. A resident of Wellington, who is largely interested in the Waihi Gold Mining Company, Upper Thames, supplies the Post with the following returns for the year jusb ending :—: — Number of tons of ore treated, 19,305 ; value of bullion realised, £61,334 ; proceeds of sale of tailings to the Cassel Company, £5000 ; — total, £66,334 ; amount paid in dividends within five months, £22,500 ; value of bullion won from the mine up to the present, £151,992.
