Quality v. Quantity.
The celebrated surgeon, Professor Billroth, of Vienna, was asked to perform an operation* upon a Russian Jew, and he agreed to do it for a fee equivalent to 250gs. On making the journey to tho small tows me which tho patient lived, he was informed thatv the Jew had suddenly died. In order, however, that he should not suffer loss by the transaction, the professor was asked whether he would treat five hospital patients for a fee equal to 50gs eacii. He accepted tho offer, and did the work; and just as he was starting homewards he ascertained that one of the five pittients upon whom he had operated was the Jew" who was reported to have died.
