LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
Wellington, December 28. Nineteen blocks, of a total area of 270 565 acres, are now under offer to the Government. The commissioners are at work investigating the offers, beginning at Marlborough, where four blocks— Bo,3oo acres— are offered. In Canterbury there are six— one of them 114,000 acres— of a total area of 119,175 acres. In Obago there are also six, of 14,090 acreß ; in Southland two, of 47,000 ; and in Hawke's Bar one, of 110,000 acres. It is found that the restriction of selections to 320 acres prevents some desirable land being acquired, because the area allowed settlers from the nature of the land would be too small to be profitable Nearly 10,000 acres in South Canterbury and Otago, lately acquired, will shortly be opened under the perpetual lease. The Kamo Coal Company's property, in the north of Auckland, is under offet to the Government.
CHRisTcnokcn, December 28. The Pareora block, near Timaru, recently acquired by the Government from the N.Z. and A. Land Company, was allotted at the Land Office to-day by ballat.
