The Pomahaka Parchase. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — I see by your widely-read paper that the purchase of the Pomahaka estate is causing a great deal of correspondence between different parties. Now I am one of the oldest settlers in the Rankleburn district, and I know every foot of the Pomahaka estate. I think Mr Scobie Mackenzie is making a great mistake when he says the land is worth only 10s an acre. I wish I could get SQO acres of it at £3 per acre. As for the petition, I have read it, and I think it is a very true report of the pro-; perty. From the centre of the estate to Wairuna railway station is seven and a-balf miles, and from the centre to Clinton railway station » nine miles. It ia six miles from the Clutha river to the Pomahaka river, where all the. property faces. The steamer Matau runs between Balclutha, Olydevale, and Toapeka Mouth every day if she can get cargo — the road between the two rivers ia almost level, so thcr« is plenty of outlets in every way. It is a great pity for the settlers in this district that the estate did not contain 70,000, instead, of 7000 acres, We do not know what to do with our boys ; they have to go away from home to look for land \ in fact," several of them have gone, or taken up land in the North Island. All the settlers in this district hold that the Minister for Lands has made a splendid in the purchase of the Pomahaka estate.

Trusting that I have not taken up too much of your valuable space,— l am, &c , John Tyson, Sawmiller.Ranklfcborn, December 22. In the Sydney Supreme Court the other day a boy brought an action against a private firm to recover damages for the loss of his two hands. The jury gave the lad £93 damages. A few days later, in an action against the Railway Commissioners, an elderly lady, for the loss of two toea, recovered £475.
