SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.
The regular monthly meeting of the School Commissioners of Otago, held on Tuesday afternoon, was attended by Messrs J. P. Mattland (in the chair), J. Walker Bain, A. Baldey, W. Dalla?, and James Green. A letter was received from Messrs R. Campbell and Sons (Limited) agreeing to accept seven-year leases of sections 32 and 1, 2, and 3 of 57, Takatimo, in terms of agreement. The monthly report of the Southland agent (Mr J. L. M'Donald) was read and dealt with. Reporting on j the . sale of leases in township of Marakura, Lake Te Anau, the agent stated that the sale was poorly attended, and that there was not a single bid received for either building or suburban sections. He also stated that the coal area on run 327 a, Waikaia," had been advertised for lease by auction at Riversdale, en the 25th ' inst., and forwarded 45 leases and other documents for execution, signtd, sealed, and duly executed. He reported that he had latelyvisited' Lumsdeu, Gore, and Mataura, and inspected the reserves situated in those townships. A number of transfers of leases were consented to. An application was received from the lessee of sections 22 and 23, block VII, Otepopo district, drawing attention to the fact that the applicant proposed to plant trees for shelter, &c , and also asked that same be made, subject to valuation at the end of his lease. — The commissioners decided that they could not see their way at present to allow valuation for tree planting. • , n An application was received from the lessee of section 9, block X, for a reduction of rent.— The application was declined. An application from the .lessee of seotion 5, blook XX, township of Herbert, to have rent seduced or to be allowed to surrender his lease also declined.
It having appeared in the public press that the Minister for Lands is about to introduce a bill dealing with the administration of education reserves, it was resolved that the secretary telegraph for copies of the proposed bill for the consideration of the commissioners, and that if necessary a special meeting of the commissioners be convened for the purpose of considering its provisions. Accounts . amounting to £136 16s 7d were passed for payment. A lot of routine business was also transacted.
