The following definite announcement appears in the Providence Journal : — Barker and Becd will play 30 games in Providence next September for the championship of the world and 250d0l a-side. Barker allows Reed 40dol for expenses. A Word for the Books.— An , unwonted interest in the silent game has of late been manifest in Woonsocket, as well as in other parts of the State. The old-time invincibles who have tried a bout with the latter day school of "book" players find to their sorrow that they are many laps behind the rising generation. Too juvenile class are not content with the slow, plodding method of their ancestors, ■ and not a few instances have been noted where youngsters have borrowed, , begged, or bought a HQl's " Synopsis," or other elementary work, and secretly planned vengeance against some hitherto more fortunate playmate. This increased interest is undoubtedly caused by the frequent occurrence of matches of local importance, such as for city or State championships. For the most part these have been played for no stake 'other than the title involved, and thus the pastime has been free from the objectionable feature to which so many with reason object..— Woonsocket (U.S.A.)
