Chess for the Million.
Knowing that it is difficult to procure books on the game it was intended to publish a series of notes on the openings. Having learnt, however, that the British Chess Company of Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, have prepared books suited for learneis we procured tome of them, and wo find them exactly what was required. The first of the series is entitled " How to Play Chess Well." It is a book for beginners, the published price of which is 2d, and is illustrated with numerous diagrams fully explanatory of the game, and contains also the laws of the game and various exercises for learners. Another of the series is called "Six Practical Chess Openings," and is compiled from match games played by modern masters and strong club players. It is published at the price of 4d in paper covers, and 6d in cloth. It is quite sufficient to give any student of the game a competent knowledge of the openings with which it deals. Take for example the Ruy Lopez. Steipitz in his "Modern Chesslnßtructor"giVes42 variations of the opening of about 12 moves each. This little sixpenny book gives no fewer than 63, up to nine and ten moves each. At our request Messrs Wise, Caflin, and Co., of Princes street, Dunedin, have consented to order a supply of the books, and they expect to leceivethem about the end of December. As students of the game will thus be enabled to obtain them, and thus have the information they require in a cheaper and more convenient form than the column of a weekly journal, the papers on Chess for the Million will be discontinued for the future. We arc glad to be able to state that we know of many instances in which, from the instruction contained in these papers, persons have been able to make their own chess boards and men, and acquire a fair knowledge of the game.
