DUNEDIN HORSE SALEYARDS. Weekly Report. Messrs Wright, Stephekson, and Co. report as follows :— , There was an unusually large attendance at our sale on Saturday, when we offered a consider, able number of draught horses, chiefly from South Canterbury. A very strong demand was experienced for all sorts— a result we have anticipated in our report for tlia past few weeks would happen when any number of good draughts were offered. Buyers were present from all parts of Southland, and good prices were realised for nearly every draught forward. The best competition was, however, for really good mares or geldiDgs, for the latter chiefly from town buyers, who were present in force. First-class draught mares were, on the other hand, in great request from country buyers, and a, much larger number could readily have been placed. As we _ have already intimated, sellers need have no misgivings about sending their.draught horses to this market just now, for, when really good sorts are offered, there are always buyers who are prepared to give good values. , Draught mare 3 fetched ._up to £25, but had more superior animals been present larger prices could readily have been obtained Light harness horses were in small supply, but those which passed under the hammer were better competed for than for some time past. We quote :— For first-class draughts (extra heavy), £25 to £30 ; pood ordinary draughts (young), £18 to £22; medium, £12 to £16 ; aged, £6 to £10; good hacks and harness horses, £12 to £16; medium, £7 tt. £9; light and inferior, £2 10s to£s.. N 1 THE LABOUR MARKET. Mr Skene reports under date August 8 :— The more than usual leDgtby spell of bad weather is seriously retarding all sorts of outdoor work and workers. Hungry men out of work do not believe in the virtues of-patienco, but the clerk of the weather will have bis own way. A few gardeners, grooms, cooks, dairy people, and boys ars the only ones moving. Couples and shepherds and • general station hands are still quiet. Town is overstocked with clerks, shopmen, and unsuitables. Country wages keep fair.
