Notes from Reefton.
(From Our Own .Correspondent.) Reefton, August 5. The Stock Exchange report:— "The battery returns to hand are : 300oz of amalgam from the Progress, 148oz from the Globe, and 277J0z of gold from the Big River. Very little business has been done in scrip during the week, and except for Alpines and Big Rivers buyers are scarce, me latter claim is reported to be looking better than it ever did, and the shares are likely to rise. The Progress continues to crush well, and should. De able to pay dividends for a long time to come. Battery Returns: -Big River, 810oz amalgam from 160 tons (clean up) ; Progress, 300oz amalgam from 210 tons ; Globe, 148oz amalgam from 180 tons ; Cumberland, 98oz amalgam from 80 tons. THE MACBTOWN REEFS Premier Consolidated Company.— Mr Walter J. Stanford, the general manager, reports, under date 31st July:-" The battery at this mine was started again at 5 p.m. on the 26th in spite of the frost and snow, and worked for 41 hours up to Saturday night. We expect to be able tp continue working steadily, but only for about eight hours a day The reef in the main drive low level, west still continues 6ft wide, showing coarse visible gold all through. We are driving east on two other reefs which make their junction at different points with the low level adit. Both of these prospect and promise very well. The crosscut ; to the (Jueen Victoria reef progresses slowly, the country being of a very hard nature. ' The Tipperary Mine.— Mr W. J. Stanford, the general manager, reports :-" Very active work is in progress at this mine— some 50 to 60 men being employed. During the past month the total footage, rising, driving, crosscutting m four faces, was 115 ft, and 31 tons of quartz stqped besides, representing about 69 days' work for eight hammers. The proposed new low level adit was started to-day, and will be pushed ahead vigorously. Its total length to strike the reef will be about 1780ffc, and will give us about 310 ft in height vertical below the present adit. A gang of 20 men are employed constructing the tramway The repairs and alterations to the mill are progressing well. We recorded l*sin rain between the 24th and 26th, while on the nights of 29th and 30th 12in of snow fell, which is still lying.
