BLACKSTONE.
' July. 31. —After a Bpell of fine spring-like weather rain began to fall on Saturday, accom? panied by a very cold wind. I think $here ia every chance of Mr Paulin's theory concerning the \ weather being verified in this district at least, for last night the rain turned to snow. Curling.— The great match of the season took place on the 19th and 20th inst., the Otago Central Club beating the St. Bathans and Hill's Greek Clubs and carrying off the two principal curling trophies — viz., a handsome marble clock and a valuable silver cup. So enthusiastic are the devotees of this game that no hour is too early for , them to turn out on a cold winter morning. Land Sale.— The burning question of who is and who is not, to have the land has been settled, and consequently there has been much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, and many find themselves in the position of the "little pig" in the old nursery rhyme. Talk about settling the people on the land— that is a problem which " old Father Time" alone can solve. Election Note.— The land question having been. settled, the all-important subject is the coming election. I think it will be a -very tight tun between Scobie and Honest John. Even now there' are bets being .laid as to who will ;be the
winner. ' Post Office.— About 18 months ago the post office was transferred from Mrs Foote to Miss S. Inder, but by some oversight the money orders^ and postal note's were withheld. This makes it ■ very awkward for the public, the nearest money order office [being St. Bathans, which is distant seven miles. It is to be hoped that the authorities will rectify this mistake. - • - A Farewell.— A pleasant social evening was held on Friday, the occasion being to say farewell to Miss Mason, who has held the position of teacher in the school here for over three years, and who is now leaving on account of failing health. Miss Allen has been appointed in her stead.
