SOUTHLAND NEWS NOTES,

The nineteenth annual champion ploughing match of Southland was held near Invercargill to-day. The competitors were not quite so numerous as last year, but' there was a marked revival of public interest in the proceedings shown by the increased attendance of visitors, though the day was cloudy and showery. The champion prize went to D. M'Farlane, Edendale. Mr M'Connochie, of Taieri, acted as single judge. The wooUhed at Gladfield station and between 400 and 500 sacks of oats were destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. Both building and contents were covered by insurance. Considerable damage is reported to have been done at Waimea and that locality by the gale on Tuesday. — Five hundred pounds were paid for a couple of canaries in London recently,
