MAORI SUPERSTITION.

' , * Constable Moore, of Kamo, is investigating^ the causes of death of sundry Maoris who died in*the Ngunguru district within the past few months, it is alleged, through treatment by a Maori tohunga, who was providing remedies against witchcraft or mukutui The treatment' is said to have consisted ; of being "stripped andput in a scalding bath and then cooled off in the ' open air, and in other cases the application of poultices of boiliDg hot potatoes or pumpkins to , the bare skins. Eight persons are . steted to - have died in the Ngunguru district— from an . infant six months old to a, girl .aged 15., A meeting of Natives is to be held at Eaikohoe to consider the action of the tohunga/ Constable Moore has been informed that' from 40 to 'so Natives have died between the North C^pe and . Whangarei through this kind of heroic treatment . for preventing being mukutued or bewitched.
