WELLINGTON NOTES.
By Onlooker.
July 22. A pleasnntjlnale to the Steeplechase meeting of the United Hunt Club took place yesterday in the rooms of the popular secretary of the Wellington Racing Club, when a deputation appointed by the United Hunt Club waited upon Mr H. M. Lyon, who acted as hon. secretary for the club's recent race meeting, and warmly expressed the club's thanks for the able manner in which he had conducted the meeting. There is a noticeable demand in the Wairarapa for trotting horses, which can be traced to growth in popularity of this class of racing. Mr Hercock, of that district, thinks the prospect so good that during a recent journey up the west coast he thought it good enough to invest in a trotting stallion, with which he hopes to stock the district.
A match has been arranged to take place at Otaki on the 28th inst. between Mr Bell's feweet William and Mr Bailey's Kincraig. • The distance is to be about a mile, over four flight3 # of hurdles. Much interest was taken not only in the Wairarapa, but in town, in the meeting of the Hunt Club. In the attendance of some 700 were included many visitors from these parts. In the dividends nothing of the sensational occurred, Twilight's win in the Hack Hurdles bringing in the biggest return, and that was only £11 14s ; whilst £6 9s and £6 8s were the next best. The racing was none of the best in the world, even for hack racing, but much must be allowed for recent rains having affected the course, making the going heavy. Dromedary's win in the Wairarapa Steeplechase Handicap was about the only bit of excitement provided, as his rider was thrown at the log fence, but mounting again he gave chase, and came out right enough. The machine worked off £1923 for the meeting.
