EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.
The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended 30th June, which have been compiled by the secretary to the Otago Education Board, show that there were 202 schools in operation in the district, employing 226 male and 269 female teachers, besides 15 teachers of sewing. The number of pupils on the school rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 22,712, and at the end of the quarter 22,785, consisting of 11,824 boys and 10,961 girls. The averago attendance for the quarter was 9719 boys and 8817 girls, making a total of 18,536, being 1045 less than the average for the previous quarter, and 773 less than that for the corresponding quarter of 1892. The average of the city and suburban schools were :— George street, 753 ; Albany street, 660 ; Normal, 637 ; Eaikorai, 631 ; High street, 611 ; Caversham, 561 ; Macandrew road, 506 ; Forbury, 481 ; Mornington, 459 ; Union street, 443 ; Arthur street, 443; North-Easfc Valley, 431; Kensington, 370; R&vensbourne, 201. The attendances at Oamaru were : — South school, 411 ; North, 379 ; Middle, 355. At the District High Schools-.— Port Chalmers, 494; Tokomairiro, 314; Palmerston, 28ft ; Lawrence, 236. During the quarter a school was opened at Houipapa, Catlins river.
