He Lost on the Table.
Captain Dash, of the B—»B — »- Regiment, was an officer well known for his success in betting, and thought himeelf invincible in that line. One day he visited Major-C 's room, and noticed a new table, which he measured and found to be the same height as his stick, 3ffc.
A .few days after the major invited some brother officers, amongst them' the captain, to dinner. After dinner the conversation tnrned to betting matters, and the captain turned his attention to the table, which he offered to bet Vas 3ft in height, ' The major at once took the bet, and on being measured, the table was found to be 2ft lOin.
3he captain, of course, lost the bet, and the major explained that when the captain came to his room he was shaving, and saw him through the window measure the table, knowing he would make a wager about it, he had 2in sawn off each leg, thus shortening it and taking the captain down. ■
How to Compose Gargoyles.
A portion of Salisbury Cathedral was being restored, and a gentleman noticed a man' busily engaged in carving a grotesque face, with apparently no design to go by. He went up to him and said : < " How do you manage to invent suoh fright* fully ugly faces?" The man replied : " I eats a piece of cold pork before I goes to bed and then I dreams 'em."
