AUCKLAND TOPICS.
By Taihoa. Auckland, July 18. • Mr C. Weal left for Christchurch on Monday to take delivery of the thoroughbred Freedom, who lately belonged to Mr D. O'Brien.
I hear that Merrie England was under offer at a small advance, and if so it is a pity that this horse was not also secured for the Waikato. The Sir Hercules strain through St. George would have been a great acquisition, and I can only recommend his owners to lease him to, say, Mr Walters, of Papakuri, and he will get a fair chance and a full season— in fact, it is the very Btrain we want for some of our Musket mares.
Mr M'Minamin is shortly to have his team strengthened* by Tattler, Isidore, and The Brigadier— Lady Lonsdale colt. lam pleased to see this steady young trainer and jockey receiving patrons, as he is well worthy of it. This also may be said of his brother Frank. I like to see the young New Zealand blood get a chance of coming to the front, and feel sure that these brothers will make a big effort. Old Shillelagh and Parnell have both been turned out.
Of the Wellington Park matrons served last season six have proved not in foal, and there is some doubt about Pungawerewerefdam of Crackshot). The mareß empty are Lady Walmsley (Carbine's full sister), Rose of Wellington (by St. Leger from Fleurette), Hazel (by Nordenfeldt— Ouida), Queen Cole , (by King Cole— Rosalie), Gannett (by Anteros— Albatroßs), and Brown Bess (by Musket — Rosalie). Look out for the Cyclops joker, called Despised. He is going south for a moral. Never mind his one eye. He is a good one to follow. AH our two-year-olds are being trotted— the tracks are unfit to work on.
Adam Byers has the Nordenfeldt— Cressina colt, 4yrs, the dead spit of old Libeller, with splendid middle piece— a likely-looking covey. Better breeding could not be wished for, as Cressina is by Leolinus from Ros*arina (by Traducer and Yatterina). This colt has only just been put in work. He stands about 15Jhds, and in colour is like Libeller.
Brown Alice has been taken up again after a short sojourn at Wellington Park.
