OTAGO GOLF CLUB

The annual meeting of the Otago Golf Club was held on Thursday evening in Mr J. R. Scott's office, and was attended by a dozen members. Mr C. R. Howden (captain) presided. _-„.-,— ANNUAL REPORT. ' The report of the retiring committee, which was adopted, was to the following effect :— The committee, in presenting the first annual reporb of the club, beg to congratulate the members on the state of the club's finances and its affairs generally. As will be noticed, the balance sheet for the year's operations shows a small credit balance, and as against any outstanding accounts the club has assets exceeding these in value. As is usually the case during the first year of a club's existence, the committee have been confronted with difficulties of various kinds ; but they are happy to state that these have now for the most part been surmounted, and that the club may now be considered to be in fair going order. They note with great satisfaction the enthusiasm of members, and trust that their successors in office will be able to make a similar remark at the end of their term of office. The committee have on several occasions been compelled to alter the course of play, but are of opinion that the club will not have any very grave difficulties to contend with on this score for some months to come, at allevents. It may be mentioned hero that the committee have lately voted a further sum of o ,£lo for improving the ground, but have not yet begun to expend it. , . The committee are quite sure that their successors will be glad to receive suggestions at any time from club members as to matters connected with the administration of the club, and as to laying off the course and other matters connected with the welfare of the club, and would recommend that a suggestion book be kept at the club house for that purpose. Turning to the play of the members, the committee beg to congratulate them on the marked improvement on that. Various competitions have been held during the year, thefirst of any importance being the scratch competition on 3rd December for the Bruntsfield gold medal, which was won by Mr 6. Todd with a score of 98. Mr Todd on this occasion also won one of the trophies presented by the club captain for the lowest net score; and Mr G. Todd, jm., after playing off a tie with Dr Brown, won the other trophy given by the captain. The prize given by Mr G. Todd for novices playing in this competition was won by Mr J. H. Stanley. On the 2ith May the club's cup was played for by handicap competition and was won by Mr H. MacNeil, jun., with a score of 83 (97-14). In addition to these competitions, the clubs St. Andrew's cross competition has been held regularly every month for some time past, and has, up to date, been won by Messrs H. Rose (once), G. Todd (once), H. Park (twice), and J. B. Scott (twice). With regard to the clubhouse, the committee beg to express their satisfaction with the result of the club's venture so far, and see no reason to doubt that it will continue to be a success. The committee notice with pleasure that the Ladies' Golf Club is progressing satisfactorily. In conclusion, they beg to suggest that their successors in office take into consideration the question of instituting some matches amongst members of the club and also with foreign clubs.
