THE WANGANUI ELECTION.
MR WILLIS ELECTED BY A LARGE MAJORITY. Wanganui, June 9. The polling for the election of a member of the House of Representatives for the Wanganui electorate, in place of the late Hon. J. Ballance, took place to-day. The candidates were Messrs A. D. Willis and Gilbert Carson. The latter gentleman is absent from the colony, and his election campaign was carried on by Mr Freeman Jackson. The complete returns are not to hand, as the voting at one polling booth (Okua) has yet to come, but this cannot affect the result. The following are the
The complete returns of the poll for the election of a member to represent Wanganui give Mr Willis a majority of 409, the numbers polled being— Carson 622, Willis 1031. Mr Willis had a majority of 321 in town. Mr Carson only scored a majority of 56 in three places— namely, Okoia 18, Turakina 37, and Brunswick 1. The majority for the Liberal candidate astonished his most enthusiastic supporter?, ajad congratulatory telegrams have been received from tbe Premier, Mrs Ballance, Ministers, and members of Parliament.
