Fairy, with her long start and her fine form, was a hot favourite, but a good deal of interest was manifested in the appearance of the Sydney candidate, Yum Yum, which had been placed on the post of honour. The favourite was nearly at the entrance to the straight when the latter started. Fairy led to the home turn on the last round, when Little Ben, who had been steadily gaining ground, came along with a fine stride, and wearing down the grey mare, passed her and won as he liked in the straight by 50 lengths from Fairy, Ike and Nellie fighting out positions for places.
