J After a little delay through Merganser and Brigand refusing to join the field, Mr Cutts lowered the flag to a beautiful start, of which St. Hippo took the first advantage, running out in front with a length's lead of The Workman, with Pinflre next, after whom were Scotfree, Merganser, and Coalscuttle last. The Workman ran up to St. Hippo as they swept past the six-furloDg post, Pinfire being still third, with Merganser next, bub at the cutting The Workman, whose mission was to make the running, was in first place, and ie strode past the half-mile post with a length to the good, Pinfire, Merganser, and Scotfree travelling in line behind him, and the pace thoroughly sound The Workman landed first into the straight, St. Hippo going .in straight style in second place, Merganser,, Scotfree, Impulse, and Pinfire in a group, and Coalscuttle ten lengths away. St. Hippo was still The Workman's nearest follower at the turn-out of the straight, where Pinfire was third and Merganser fourth, but just after they passed the two-mile post Merganser ran into third place, and almost at the same moment St. Hippo landed again at the head of the field, and was a length in front of Merganser at the cutting, The Workman and Pinfire, together, with Coalscuttle beginning to improve her position. The Workman soon afterwards died away, and the rapidly tiring Pinfire gave up third place to Impulse at the half-mile post, but the latter, though he came fast, could not affect the position. When St. Hippo turned into the straight Merganser challenged him, but the favourite had never to be called upon, and romped, home the easiest of winners by two lengths from Brigand, who ran a great horse, coming fast into the straight and beating Merganser for second plac?.
