nr\ he traction t^NQ'iWB; (Bruce Herald.)' ; , ' ) The trial of the Aveling and Porter traction engine, of which notice was given in our last issue, came off on Tuesday, under -the supervision of Mr M'Donald, of the MiltonJ Foundry,, and was an entire success. The liu&e machine staited from the foundry ab,oub 1 o"clock, and proceeding along Ajax streob'a^tonj^hed every one by the rapidiby of ibs motion. It musb hays, run ab the rate of six or sevt v miles' an hpurj and was under the most perfecbconbrol. Crossing Union street, the engine proceeded to Mr Scanlan's farm, and Ihfre turned .off the road into his farmyard through a. »arrow way'and round a sharp cornrr with a facility that" was truly surprising. Going into the yard it hitched on to a heavy threshiug machine, which it took out into the road and conroj-ed to Fairfax, keeping up a good rate of speed the while. Leaving the machine at Mr Ftihey's; ab Fairfax, the engine picked up a heavy portable engine used for driving threshing machine, and came back to Milton with it, the trial haviug occupied a little more than two hours. Th-j traction engine, worked really well, and demouitrated, vej^" conclusively its capablcness for tho work oi a couutry district. It can develop J.owor up to between 30 and 40 horse 3, aud can- run along a fair country road with 10 tons or more behind it. Several hundred people inspected the engine when it stopped at Sir Duthit's with the portable attached. Mr Hall, of Christchurch, the agent's engineer, drove the traction, aud Mr M'Duould, jun., attended r to the steering gear. Less than a -sack of coal was used ab the trial, 'the motor thus being 'econo-* mical as well as powerful ; in fact, the engine is claimed to bo superior to anything of tho kind yet introduced in the diatricb. For insbance, the road wheels of Aveliugaud Porter's engines are of increased diameter, the driving machinery is more securely b'dde/1 aud tho gearing betber placed, doing a^ay entirely with the old and objectionable overhanging gear, while the gearing is of the best atoel, and so js the boiler, which has been tested up to 2501b pressure. The engine is geared for two speeds —fast and plow-and h Imullcd an c.isy us a horse and c-art. it is open for inspection at Mr M 'Donald's.
