PRESERVATION INLET GOLD DIGGINGS.

Our Gore correspondent writes ug that since his report of the 23rd August last week's Obago Witness he has received many inquiries as to the best way of getting to these new diggings andHhe expense incurred. He iafo'rms us that the only direct communication toTrescryation Inlet fa at present by the r.r. InvercargilF, which leaves Invercargill, as a rul,e, ou the Bth of each month. The charge for passage is 30s each pa63enger, or L 2 return.

As it is only a few hours steaming from Invercargill, this appears rather a high rate for poor men or prospectors to have to pay, and the rate of freight is very high— 3os per ton. Therefore it is advisable for men to take as few thiugs as possible with them, as tents, tools, stores, &c, may now be purchased at Mr F. M'Kenzie's new store at most moderate rates. If a number of men are at any time anxious to get over together, a cutter can be engaged. There is every probability of these new diggings turning out very rich, but still, as the gold is very " patchy," many are sure to be doomed to disappointment, and . we strongly deprecate anything like a " rush , to this spot, but rather wait until they hear from any friends they may have there as to the prospects • they are getting. ' The great want that is felb by prospectors is the formation of tracks through the d^nse bush from the inlet, and it is hoped the Government will see their way to send a competent staff to attend to this matter without delay,, so that miners will have an opportunity, , of properly prospeotiug this cpuntry, ' and thus enabling them to open up, perhaps, rich leads of 'gold. At the present time there is only one track partly cut by the Government, which is practically useless. ' . This inlet is one of the most favourite spots for tourists to visit during the summer months, who all speak in the most glowing terms of its beautiful scenery ; but what is mnc^ -wanted is a good accommodation house on this' spot.'
