A British ship captain says that "whales are increasing in number so fast that accidents to ships running into them will soon be of frequent occurrence. A sailing ship under a five-knot breeze might as well strike a tree as an old bull whale." The steamship Genkia Maru, -which, recently foundered in a typhoon off the Japanese coast, was nearly a new vessel. She was built of mild steel in 1891 by Napier, Shanks, and Bell, : at Glasgow, and formed one of the powerful fleet of steamers under the flag of the Nippon Yushen Kaisha, which has its headquarters at Tokio; this company owns one of the finest fleets of steamers in the Eastern hemisphere. A company is being formed in England and Belgium to build large whaleback steamers for the ocean trade. The vessels are to be built by a new process, and the rivetting is to be done by hydraulic machinery. The Shire Line steamer Morayshire is to take in a large quantity of frozen meat at Rockhampton before coming on to New Zealand to complete loading for London. Her final port is to be Wei lington. The new dry dock at Glasgow, now under construction, will be 960 ft long, 80ft wide, and with 26ft on the sill.

At Paisley, on June 27, what is said to be the most powerful dredger afloat in respect of dredging capacity was launched by Messrs Fleming and Ferguson. The dredger is built for the Clyde Trustees, to be used on the Clyde. It will dredge 200 tons solid dredgings per hour. The dredger is 600 ft long, by 37ft broad, and 12ft deep.
