A Notable Tailor.

THE CREATOR OF " PEGTOP " TROUSERS. M. Paule, who has just died in Paris, was in some respects a personage. An enfant de trcupe in the Cuirassiers of the Guard during the reign of Louis XVIII, he enlisted in a hussar regiment while Charles X was on tho throne, and as chief tailor in that corps was soon setting the fashions for the French cavalry. Paule it was who created the "pegtop" pantaloons, which were so long in vogue, and which the Due d'Aumale was one of the first of the officers to adopt ; and when, on the advent of the Empire, the famous Regiment of Guides was formed under tho auspices of the brilliant Colonel — afterwards General — Fleury, he was chosen to design the effective uniform of that most fashionable of crack corps. From 1853 until the war of 1870 Paule was responsible for the correct fit and smart appearance of the regimentals of the dashing Guides, which was the most brilliant and extravagant corps which had flourished during the past century. So great did his reputation become that the Emperor would not don any military habiliments that had not been "turned out" by him. Paule's tastes always ran in the direction of tall plumes and busbies, of gaudily-braided and fur-trimmed mantles and dolmans, and of overalls cut " a la Fleury," his own conception. Past 80 years of age as he was, he was often to be seen strolling to the Boulevards, enveloped in a tightly-buttoned frock-coat, with his hat inclining well over his right ear, the very type of the old military man of former days. Many years ago he had been presented with the military medal. — Daily Telegraph.
