Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. have received intimation that the Tainui (from Lyttelton July 21) left Rio on Sunday morning, with her cargo of meat in good condition.

The P. and O. Company's new steamer Australia, of 6920 tons, was launched from the yards cf Messrs Caivd and Co. (Limited), at Greenock, on July 30. The Himalaya, a steamer of the same tonnage, which was built for the company by the same firm and launched early in March, made her trial trip in the English Channel on July 31, and averaged a speed of 19 knots an hour. The barque Alcestis was towed from Dunedin to sea on Saturday forenoon by the s.s. Plucky, and sailed with, a full cai-go of pvoduce for Brisbane.
