VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.
Auckland, August 16. Unusual 6igns of volcanic activity are reported from Lake Taupo and Mount Tongariro. The mountain has been emitting ilames lately, and a change has taken place in the aspect of the lips of the crater, one part of which has apparently fallen in. On the 10th inst. 25 shocks
of earthquake, some of them very severe, were felt in the immediate vicinity of Tokaanu, Lake Taupo, the shock 3 all travelling from the direction of Tongariro, and arc only felt within a small radius of Tokaanu. All the hot springs around Taupo are stated to be very active at present. The geyser knowu aB the " Crow's Nesb " is throwing up a great volume of. water.
