COURSING.
FIXTURES.
August 17, 18, 19.— Champion ' Stakes, Maiden Stakes, Sapling Stakes (Dunedin). August 25— Ladies' Bracelet (Oamaru).
NOTES BY MASTER M'URATII.
Owners please bear in mind that nominations for the Champion Stakes, Maiden Stakes, and Sapling Stakes, to be run at Dunedin on the 17th, 18th, and 19th inst., close with Mr H. L. James on the Bth. Pine Hut and Pine Twig are to represent the Taieri at the Christchurch meeting next week.
Tarana and Referee, two of the dogs beaten in the Victorian Waterloo Cup, were matched for LIOO a-side, the match to take place on Monday of this week, best two out of three courses.
A dispute of great local interest is being investigated by the Melbourne Coursing Club. It is with reference to a protest lodged against Marion receiving her share of the division of the Homestead Stakes, the ground of objection being that she was not then a puppy. The time for nominations for the Waterloo Stakes of the Caristchureh Plumpton Park Racing and Trotting Club has been extended to Thursday, 4th inst., entries closing with the secretary at the Empire Hotel, Christchurch, at 10 o'clock that evening. The club give LIOO as the stake, the first dog receiving L6O, runner-up L 25, and third and fourth dogs L 7 10s each.
" Sportsman " writes as follows from Oamaru : — " The Caristchureh Plumpton Club have appointed Mr J. Dalgleish slipper at their Waterloo meeting. I would suggest that the Dunedin Plumpton Club also appoint this gentleman at their next meeting. It will be remembered that he acted as slipper in Dunedin at the end of last season, and gave great satisfaction. Judging from the masterly manner in which he handles his dogs I doubt if a better and more experienced slipper can be found, and I think it is in the interests of any club to appoint the best person obtainable. I have no desire to say anything disparaging of the present appointed slipper, but it was most noticeable at the last meeting that he had not sufficient command o^er his dogs, and his slipping was very faulty, principally in hanging on to his dogs too much, which has a tendency to choke them, and a slight twist of the wrist will allow one dog to get away some lengths in advance of the other. I believe owners of dogs would be better satisfied if the club supplied the slips instead of allowing the slipper to use hi» own. I write this as an owner of dogs and in the interests of the sport.
