Notes from Reefton.

Reefton, July 30.
Stock Exchange report : — " Up to the present only four battery returns, those of the Progress, Cumberland, Globe, and Dark are to hand, making 1098oz of amalgam. The No. 2 Dark and Alpine should be known early on Monday, while at the Big River battery cleaning up will not take place till' later next week. Several of the more leading mines are said to show an improvement which will doubtless have a beneficial effect on
mining matters generally in due course. Gold is reported in the Success lease to-day, and indications over the areas under prospecting are fairly promising. There is no very perceptible change in the condition of the share market noticeable, and while one or two lines have either advanced or hardened, the extent of business transacted has been about the average. Big River and Lumberland show no alteration materially in value, and prices may be expected to shortly advance. Exchange are easier, and (iolden Lead stationary. A return from the latter is due next week. Globe are at last week's quotation, and Eureka, Homeward, and Hercules have inquiry now and then. Dark shares are quiet, and the battery is running again. Lord Edward and No. 2 Dark are at last figures. Progress sold up to 17s 3d, an advance on prices ruling for some time past. Buyers of Russell offer Is, and sellers are backward at that figure. Alpine show very little alteration in price, and a dividend is looked for next week. A number of other lines are as before." July 31. The following are the battery returns for the past week :— United Alpine, 7150z amalgam from 2ij"o tons ; Cumberland, 2frioz amalgam from' 82 tons ; Globe, 34Soz amalgam from 190 tons ; Keep-it- Dark, 590z amalgam from 62 tons ; Progress, 4270z amalgam from 210 tons (including boxes').
