An interesting return has been prepared showing the decennial increase of cattle in Now Zealand. It i 3 remarkable as illustrating the disproportionately r-'ipid development of the North Island. In 1873 tho number of cattle in the North Island w.-is H1.095, and in the South 254,781. In 1881 tho North bad 337,19 L and the .South 3i0,738. :":i I ! '9L the North had 507,423 and tho South i\ J ,' 040. Thns in the last deconnium the Norlu txhibitod an increase of 120,000 and the South a decrease of 28,000. As regards shtc:-, i" 1871 tho North Island had 1,853,551, anil"li.. .ionth 7,830,100. In 1881 the North had lflo\WS. and the South 8,867,921. Iv 1891 the Northhad 7,450,177 and, the South 10,350,567.
