EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of the Education Board, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs M. Fraer (chairman), J. Greqn, A. MKerrow, H. Clark, J. J. Ramsay, D. Borrie, and Dr Hislop. Repairs to the Kartigi and Port Chalmers school buildings recommended by the architect were agreed to. Half the cost of the improvements to the Green Island School grounds was authorised to be paid. It was decided to adopt the architect's report with reference to raising the school residence at Waitahuna and repairing the wall ; the work to be done during the summer. An application by the Albany street School Committee for forms for the gymnasium was declined ; the committee to be informed that the board had no spare forms in hand. An application by the Oamaru South School for additional chimneys to the teacher's residence was declined. The architect reported with reference to the ventilators to the Kaikorai School, and it was decided that the ventilators suggested by him be affixed to the school to be tried as an experiment before finally adopting them for other schools. An offer by Mr Jackman of L 3 per annum for the lease of two sections in the town of Reidston was declined. An application by the North Oamaru School Committee for assistance in tree planting was declined. An application by the Kaitangata School Committee for permission to sejl the tanks aud devote the proceeds to the" planting of trees was declined. The sum of L 5 each was granted to the Waitahuna West and Akatore School Committees for improving the school grounds. Consideration of an application from the Waikoikoi School Committee for an addition to the teacher's residence was deferred. An application from the Cromwell School Committee for raising the wall adjoining the school was declined. The Luggate and Kyeburn Diggings School Committee wrote asking to be supplied with wire netting for the purpose of protecting the trees planted round the school grounds from the rabbits. — The application was declined. It was decided to send a teacher to the Strath-Taieri School Committee on the Ist of October, provided that the attendance for the coming quarter was up to the number entitling the school to an increased staff. The Waiwera School Committee wrote asking that the matter of the removal of the school be settled at once one way or the other, and that a deputation of the board visit the district and report. — It was decided to inform the committee that the board had no intention at present of removing the school. The secretary was instructed to make the necessary arrangements for the sale of the old school buildings and sites at Anderson's Bay and Kaitangata at as early a date as possible. An application for the establishment of a school at Upper Purekireki was referred to the inspector to report upon when next visiting the district.
