A public meeting of the unemployed was held at Oamaru on. the 13th to consider the question of obtaining work in the district. About 200 were present, and it was unanimously decided to ask the Government to put the men on the Livingstone road, where laud will shortly be thrown open for settlement and which this road will open. It was also resolved to ask that the Lands for Settlement Bill should be pushed through the House so that men might be able to "settle on small blocks of good land. A meeting of the creditors of R. B. Williams, stock and station agent, held at Invercargill on the 14th inst , resolved to recommend the bankrupt for his discharge. Williams unconditionally retracted all he had said at the previous meeting with reference to the action of the Union Bank of Australia, which he then said was the chief cause of his bankruptcy. Ho expressed regret that while smarting under misfortune he had made the remarks. News from Raratonga says that? Mr Edward Cooper, solicitor, who left Auckland suddenly and has since been made bankrupt, left Raratonga for Tahiti in an American schooner, supposed to be bound for San Francisco.
