RACING IN AUSTRALIA.
V.R.C. GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. Fikst Day — Saturday, July 9. Fine weather was enjoyed for the V.R.C. Grand National meeting. There was a large attendance. The followiug are the results : — MAIDEN HURDLES. About two miles. Havilah 1 Banda 2 Cuimberoona 3 Fifteen horses started. Won by three lengths. Time, 4min OJsec. TWO-YEAIt-OLD HANDICAP. Six furlongs. Insomnia, 8.4 1 Brotherton, 8.0 2 Wirth, 8.13 3 Fourteen started. Won by a length. Time, lmin 19sec. MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE. About two miles. Egyptian 1 Stockwell 2 These were the only two placed by the judge. Eight horses started. Won by 100 yards. Time, 4min 304 sec. UIIAND NATIONAL HURDLES. About two miles. Redleap, 11.10 1 Fire King, 11.9 2 Donald, 11.4 3 Twenty-three horses started. Betting : 4to 1 agst Donald, 8 to 1 liedleap, 10 to 1 Pioneer, Bolton, Abcrgyle, and Satyr, 14 to 1 Friction and Pilot, 20 to L Fire King. From an excellent start Havilah went to the front and led past the stand, when Say Forth and Redleap took temporary charge. This pair held their positions until passing the stand for the second time, when Pilot joined issue and tbe trio led alternately for some distance. Much the same order was preserved along the back stretch, but coming to the .home turn the race was robbed of a good deal of interest owing to Satyr, Porcius, and Knight of the Garter falling. Redleap was first in the straight, and eventually won by two lengths, six lengths separating second and third. WINTEK HANDICAP. One mile and a-quarter. Newman, 6.10 1 Lapstone, 7.11 2 Graduate, 7.3 3 Seventeen horses started. Won by a long neck. Time, 2min 13^sec.
