CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

I The above council met at Balolutha on Friday I afternoon. There were present: Captain Maokenzie I (chairman). Messrs Brown, Christie. Hay, Mitchell, Simmers, Wallace, M Lafchlan, and Dallas. COBRESPONDENOK. The Auditor general returned the balance-ibeet, oertifled by him. Hans Hallberg called attention to the bad state of a small pirtlou of road from clstriot road to township of Sherwood.— Beferred to f.be engiueer with authority to have the necessary repairs effected. Meters D. and B. A. Williamson wrote with reference to the condition of thi road Owake to Clinton.— On the motion of Cr M'Laohlan, seconded by Cr Dallas, it wag agreed that the engineer prepare plans aud specifications for opening the main road Clinton to Owake, and that tenders for the work be calk d for next meeting ; coot of same ,to be charged against moneys acoruing from the Olutha Elv<:r Board. A. Muir (Clinton) wrote wiih reference to the impassable state of the road between his place 'and M-laren's.- Beceived. Q. H M'Keneie inquired as to where the gravel had to be carted from for the contract for gravf-llirg road from Waikoikoi sohoolhouse to the bridge.— Beoelved. The Arthurton School Committee asked that the >stone crossing at the sohool gate on read leading to Fukerau be put ia repair; cost about 18a.— Xhe eDginenr to attend to the matter. James Chalmers (Kurivrao) called attention to the condition of the road pasilng through his property.— Beceived. ' ' • William Chapman wrote, with rtfarence to the road leading to B. S. Mackenzie's section, block IX Qlenomsru (Hunt's road), that the survey pegs were gone and that the lawmill companies were doing all they could to blook out and discourage those who come to settle in the locality. Ho asked the council to indicate where the road was intended to be. On the motion of Cr Hay, it was agreed that Messrs Gfreig and Co. be asked to at once open up the road ; failing which, the council will institute 'proceedings for damages Mr George Hay notified that he was about to fenoe the roadline through sections 1 and 2, blook X. Glenomaru, and asked the council to fi I up a piece of swamp on the road to permit of his bavipg the fence erected.— Xhe engineer to call for tenders for the work. A. Catherwood wrote askiDg the council to give him access, to his property, being seo'.ions 1-6, 18, 23, and 24, blook XI, Uatlins —Cr Dallas explained the petition of the matter, and it was agreed to ask Mr Oatherwood to «ay whioh road he wanted opened up. William itt'Phee asked the council to repair a piece of road to enable him to get to the faotory with his milk without going through his neighbour's property. He also asked to be exempted from paying rates this year, seeing he could not get his produre 'sent to market.— Cr Brown explained, that there were no funda available for the road ; ,and it was agreed that the matter should stand qver for the , preient. ' ! Henry Glbion asked that a road might be made to his property, section 11, block IV, Port; Molyneux. He said he bad been 31 years resident fch^re, and had been paying rates ever since rates were jfirit levied, and yet was without a road to his place.— On the motion of Or Hay, it was agreed that the engineer should report on the matter at next meeting. Mrs Ottoway pointed out the necessity of a bridge being erected across the ffugget burn at "Mrs Campbell's, Nugget Bay, to enable -sohool- children' andviiitors to ge!i across.— On the motion of CrHAT, seconded by Or Mitchkli, it was agreed that the engineer erect a footbridge over the creek and lay off work on the road ; tenders to be called for next meeting. R. 3. M'KeDzie asked that the road lending to his property, sections 60 and 61, blook IX GHenomaru, might be resurveyed, as the survey pegs were all gone, and consequently he was unable to have the track cleared.— Matter being attended to. Robert M'Klnnm, Tahatik-, called attention to the Owake to Clinton road at Chalmers' place, about a mile of whoa required attention. Should funds not b& available to finish the .road, fcbeu he asked that the necessary culverts be put in —Received. John Craig pointed out that Hunt's road, Owake,' was in a dangerous condition, and intimated that he would hold the council responsible for damages •hould any accident occur.—^Cr Hay suggested that - the surfaoeman should be sent 'to place scrub in the '• ruts and to surface the road — Suggestion agreed to. Glasgow Logan called attention to the increasing number of stray cattle depasturing on the roads in the Owake district, and especially around his pro-* perty; also, to obstructions on the public road botween sections ;7 and 12," block VIII. The Borough Clerk, Kaitangata, intimated that a deputation f>om the o,'uucil would not attend that, meeting as wSs intended. r-Received. ■ Hugh Shanks pointed/out that a portion of the road between sections 25 and 23, blook V, GKenkenioh, required gravelling. He explained that this was the road on which he, together with J Noble and J. Otraham, bad wrought for 10 days last summer in order to make -it passable through a swamp; alio, that good gravel near to tho'road would be given free •of charge.— Or Simmifs explained that the applicants had done nobly, they had ..expended £20. or, £30 on the road, "and had done good work.
