Mr Joseph Bmitfa, Jan., read a paper on 11 Pastoral Farming" before • recent meeting ol tho Stirling Literary Society, in whioh he refers to Manures as under:— " A few words upon manures. The kind most suitable for turnips of coarse depends entirely on the condition of the land. If the land be poor, either naturally or by overcropping , yon have no better opportunity of showing it your kindness. The turnip land nearest the homestead may be well manured from the farmyard for the sake of convenience, and the artificial manures can be used on the land farthest away, thereby saving a good deal in the way of cart* ing. When stockyard manure is need I think it should be ploughed in at the first ploughing, so that by the time the turnips are sown it will have become well mixed with the soil and thoroughly rotted. The quantity usually applied is from 10 to 12 tons per acre. Artificial manures are usually applied at sowing -rime, and as there is diversity of opinion as to whioh of them is best, I shall mention a few. Bonedust : Its action on the soil and its power to produce a large turnip crop is well known to farmers. The quantity allowed per aore is from 2cwt to 3owt. Being Meat-producer thesmallei it is ground the mere useful it is as a manure. Then guano has proved an excellent manure for turnips, and being cheaper than bonedost is more generally used. Its lasting effects on the land have been apparent for a greater l«ngth of time after its application than either of the other two." ALL OUR MANURES ANALYSED By PROFESSOR BLACK and MR POND, Public Analysts. AT OUR CHEMICAL WORKS IN THE NORTH ISLAND (AUCKLAND) We have * very large demand for our BPEOIAL POTATO, CORN, ORCHARD, VINE, MAIZE, And OTHER SPECIAL MANURES. These Manures' contain suitable quantities of soluble phosphates and ammonia to secure a vigtrous start, and a sufficiency of potash and other salts—soluble' and insoluble— necessary for successful growth. We are now able to supply from our Burnside Works Manures to suit all classes of Crops. When any Special Manure is required, the olass of crop it is to be used for, and the nature of the soil should be stated, so as to get the Manure moot suitable. N.B.— Persons using our Manures do Not Sun Any Risk of Losing a Season's Crop, unless in case of drought wherein seed laok the necessary moisture to germinate.
