DAMAGE TO THE MANCHESTER CANAL.
By a high tide in the Mersey on July 12 a temporary dam, 250 ft wide, collapsed, the debris blocking the Shropshire Union Canal and Bastham section. The slip was immense. Gangs of men were put to work to restore the dam. A second disaster followed by the giving way of another temporary embankment on the 13th, whioh left nothing to protect the works from the ravages of the flood; while the high tides are sweeping in, moving vast masses of debris and destroying in a few hours the product of years of labour costing millions of money. The engineers now say the resumption of the work of construction in the damaged sections will be delayed for months, pending the removal of the debris and the erection of new barriers. The opening of the new branch canal, whioh was near at hand, has been postponed indefinitely. The shipping element of Liverpool is not at all dissatisfied with the situation.
