Notes from Reeften. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

Bbkfton, August 15. Stock Exchange report •.— " The weekly amalgam returns to band to-day from the Alpine, Big River, Fiery Grow, Cumberland, Progresi, No. 2 Dark, and Globe batteries amount to ISOIoz, whioh is indeed a very fair record. The .Progress is not yet running full time, and the Globe tonnage is less than usual, on account of a temporary interruption. At the Alpine full time may be expected from this out. During next week crushing at the Golden Lead will be resumed, and there Is every prospect of all parts of the field being represented in the battery returns for some time ahead. The share market has had no very marked alteration for the week, and, although a few lines enow an advance, business has been limited, and dealer* must be keen to get parcels to operate on. Big River are stationary at former rates and have bad few transactions, while the same may be said for Cumberland*. Exchange have been neglected, and show the effect of the prevailing dullness with a lot of other lines in regard to which no new developments have taken place. Fiery Cross show a rise and have had pretty fair inquiry and business. Golden Lead are offering at a reduotlon on last week's figure, and Homeward Bound improved and sold to 6s 9d. Happy Valley found buyers up to sd, and Hercules are wanted at 2s. Dark sold up to 16s, and buyers are nnsupplied. Edwards show no alteration. Merrijigs are easier, while No. 2 Dark moved up to sales at 6s, being an advance on former rates. This is a consistent little stock, and investors are beginning to notice it. Buyers of Pandora offer low prices, and Busseil have been looked for from outside. The stone in the latter proved payable, opens up well, and' the property has a future. Triumph have buyers at low prioes, and United Alpine show an advance and a muoh better feeling. Another body of stone has been struck in the mine, which throughout shows yean of work on the main lode already proved. Shares sold up to 18s 6d to-day, and doubtless the excellent firm tendency will be sustained and lead to steady business. A number of other lines remain as before without any change to notei Begarding the proposed new Mining BUI it is satisfactory to know there is a fair likelihood of the measure being put back so as to allow time for a thoroughly representative conference, by which its inequalities and unworkable parts could be bettered, explained, and the requirements and necessities of the different mining centres properly dealt with. Any measure calculated to hamper mining seriously affeots the Inanganua distriot, whioh has but the one industry to support a large population.

August 16. The following are the battery returns:— Ho 2 Dark, 140oz amalgam from 90 tons ; United Alpine, 4140z amalgam from 263 tons; Globe, 119oz amalgam from 155 tons ; Cumberland, 1730z amalgam from 160 tons ; Big Biver, 3160z amalgam from 76 tons ; Progress, 1550z amalgam, top plates ; Fiery Gross, 2850z amalgam from 86 torn.

WOLFRAM. TO THE EDITOR.

g IBi — Several months ago there appeared in your daily a cable from Germany stating that wolfram is largely used by German iron manufacturers. We at once wrote to Germany to

several of the largest foundries-— as Frederick Krnpp, of Essen, the famous gan mannfacturer, and to the Grusenworks in Saxony. This morning we received replies to all oar inquiries from Germany, stating th»t wolfram is not re- ! quired in their manufacture.— We are, &0., MOBITZSON AND HOPXIK. Dunedin, August 17. THE GOAL ISLABD DIGGINGS. The Southland News reporti the return of Mr John Haberfield, who has been at Coal Island diggings for the put 12 months, bringing with him a splendid parcel of heavy gold obtained from the Island. Some of the pieces weighed from4dwtto ljoz, there being altogether over 12oz in one lot. Ha, also has a smaller parcel of gold got from So. 1 Sealers' creek, on the mainland, impregnated with quartz, the ragged appearance of which is strong evidence that it could not have travelled any distance to speak of. There are now olose on 70 men on the island and mainland, and prospering is being vigourouily carried on. A discovery has been made on the mainland by Oullen and Olark, two* veteran prospectors, at a plaoe called Gulch's head, which promises to give excellent returns. The finders having, by common report on the field, deservedly struck a nice patch, with every Indication of its being of a permanent nature. There is a feeling of general satisfaction among those on the ground at the prospects of the field, which has now afforded profitable work for nearly two years to from 60 to 60 men. Mr Haberfield's party consisting of three, obtained for two months' work 240z, giving a return of over £30 a man for that time. COMMISSIONERS' FLAT COMPANY. The mine manager of the; Commissioners' Flat Gold Mining Company advises, under date Bth August :— " 1 have to inform yon that I reaobed the bottom on Thursday at a depth of about 35ft. The bottom is plpa day similar to that at the Hercules Company. There is nothing on the bottom where we are at present, as the layer of drift is down on it, but there is a layer of wash above the drift about 6ft thick, which oarries a little gold and seems to be dipping as we get baok into the flat, and should this strike the reef we will undoubtedly get good gold. I may say that it is the opinion of most of the old diggers about that there will be a layer of good wash baok a little from where we are at present working. I am working baok as fast as I possibly can, and if all goes well during next week I hope to be able to report some improvement in that direction. I have had the elevator at work two shifts per dajr during the week."
