AUCKLAND ITEMS.

(Fhom Oub Own Cobbespondent.) Attcbxand, June 23. : The intention of the Government to place a' tax of 2£per cent, on all moneys passing through the totalisator will no doubt afteot the amount to be given' in stakes in this district during tbe forthcoming meetings. With a mortgage of close upon £12,000 staring them in tbe fao« tbe tax will press very heavily on the A.8.0., and in the interests of raolng it is to be.hoped that the amount of the tax will be out down when the measure comes before the House.

Messrs Morrin, Kirkwood, Diokey, and the secretary (Mr Peroi val) have been appointed to draw qp tbe programmes for next season, but it Is unlikely that the programmes will be Issued until the deolsion of Parliament is given on the proposed tax. The committee of the A. 8.0. were approached last week on the proposal to hold, a steeplechase meeting at Takapuna. They refused to entertain tbe request. Our list of racehorses nnderwent a further reduction to-day by 'the departure of the steeplechaser Takapau, who was shipped to Sydney by the Manapouri. It was understood that George Hope was alto to be a passenger with Impulse, but some* thing oropped up to bring about an alteration in that respect. B. Collins went in charge of Takapau, and the local penoiller Mr D. H. M'Leod was also a" passenger. The steadier of 10.12 awarded to Carbine in the Melbourne Cup has not dismayed his Auckland admirers, and 10 s to 1 have been freely accepted about his chance.
