OTAKOU.
January 23.— The annual soiree in connection with the Otakou Sunday school took place in the 'Maori Kaik Hall last Wednesday evening, and was without doubt the most successful soiree yet held in tha district. The fine weather enticed a large num,ber of the good people out to take part in the affair. After doing ample justice to the good things provided the tables were cleared, and the chair was taken by Mr G. Clark, who briefly addressed the meeting on the progress made in tbe Sunday school during the past year. He stated that the Sunday school library contained nearly 300 books, which are much read and highly appreciated by youDg and old in the district. Mr Leith read the balance sheet of the Native church committee for the past year, which showed a credit balance of £3 2s lOd to begin the year with. Tbe speakers comprised Meassrs Hunter, Gain, {Falconer, S.Clark, Parry, and Martin. An apology was read from tbe Rev. A. Greig, who was I unable to attend on acconnt of a pressing engage* menfc. The ohurch choir contributed largely to tin evening's enjoyment by singing hymns from Messrs Moody and Sankey's " Enlarged Collection" between 'the speeches. Mr Waltzgott, the conductor, deserves great credit for the state of profioiency which the choir has attained under his leadership.
Picnic— As there wore lots of good things left over from the soiree, it was resolved to give the chi'dren a picnic on Saturday. Mr M. Allen very kindly offered bis paddock for thtpurpose, and Mr G. Taiaroa gave the use of the cookhouse and utensils belonging to tbe hall to make the tea in. The parents of the children supplemented supplies with home-made cakes, &o. There wrs a large gathering and plenty of amusement for young and old. T h .c weather was fine during the day, but it began to rain in the afternoon, and I fear some of the visitors from a distance would get wet ere they reached home.
