THE MILFORD SOUND ESCAPED PRISONERS.
iNVERCAuaiLi, January 27.
At the Polic9 Court today John Henry Lewis, abas Frederick Blythe, and John ■Williams, alias Allen, were charged on remand with escaping from custody at Milford Sound. At the close of the evidence for the prosecution Lewis, in reply to the usual question, said : "AH I have to say is that the authorities over us are •much to blame for my escape, knowing that I had made previous attempts a short time before at Lyttelton. There was only one warder looking after the prisoners I was with at a time, and he had no uniform, and no arms whatever. The place was quite open for any prisoner to escape without any attempt being made to stop him." AUen reserved his statement. Bath prisoners • were committed for trial at the Supreme Court, which opens here on 10th February.
