GAZETTE NOTICES.
Wellington, January 23. Major Gordon, officer commanding the Otago district, has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-colonel, and appointed to command the Canterbury district, vice Lieutenant-colonel Lean. Retired Major Webb, of Nelson, succeedd Lieutenant-colonel Gordon in command of the Otago district. Major Newall is appointed chief clerk in the Defence office.
The Gazette contains the names of 100 gentlemen who have been appointed to the Commission of the Peace.
The appointment of Sir Harry Atkinson to the Speakership of the Council is gazetted. Mr Hugh Gully has been appointed Crown Solicitor at Wellington.
The following appointments are gazetted : — Thomas E. Bennett to be Lieufceuasfc in tho New Zealand Militia, J. E. Hume to be Lieutenant in the Artillery branch Permanent Militia, Brevet-colonel A. Lean to ba Colonel on the honorary unattached list New Zealand Militia, Lieutenant-colonel Wales to be Colonel unattached list New Zealand Volunteers.
The resignation of Colonels Lean and Wales of the command of the Canterbury and Dunedin Volunteer districts, respectively, is gazetted.
