AUCKLAND ITEMS.

(FBOM OUB OWS COBRBSPONDENT.)

Auckland, January 27.

The declaration of the acceptances for the Dunedin Cup did 'not give rise to any speculation here, though Hilda is quietly inquired for at 3 and 4 to 1. George Wright is, I understand, under orders to leave by the Te Anau on Friday next for Dunedin with Hilda and Cissy. As the two daughters of Musket have not been sent to Blleralie since the A. It. 0. meeting, I am entirely dependent on hearsay for the state of their condition; but from a reliable source I gather that both mares are very well.

Major George's pair, Reprisal and Fieaole, have both been responsible for some capital work at Blleralie, and are tald to be in good nick. Harry Harrison will, I understand, leave with them by next week's steamer.

Patchwork has come on very fast of late, and his companion Qu drant seems to be fairly well, though the Inourable skin disease with which the latter is affected seems to be again at its height. The receipts in connection with the Auckland H O. Summer meeting have now been made up, and the result shows a profit of over #1000. Old Leolinus has been through many hands Bince Major George ordered him to bfl submitted for sale at Sylvia Park last year. Mr T. Williamson on that occasion bought him for 40sts. and at lOOgs that gentleman transferred him to Mr L. D Nathan. At Wellington Park last month the old son of Caterer was knocked down for 20gs to Mr J. Mulr, from whom he was purchased by Mr Williams for 2Ogs, finally passing into Mr A Austiu's hands at 20gs. The old horse carries his age extremely well, but he is not a favourite with breeders, his stock as a rule having a most unprepossessing appearance. The committee of the Auckland Racing Club had a case under its conaideration this aftornoon in the shape of an appeal from a decision given by the stewards of the Takapuna Jockey Club at the Spring meeting. A protest was entered against Kiugtail receiving M.c stakes in the Maiden Plate on the ground that hehsd run at an unreKistf"-eil meeting,; but this was thrown on., it beir.goleArly sho.tftt that Ringtail W'is nvi at an unregistered meeting. The comrnitlea passed a resolution to the < ffect that he Bhould be diequalilied. Tina means that ths T J.O. will Have to pay the stakes over ngdn. I am pleaded to state that James Ksan, the well-known trainer, has ronda great, improvement in health since coming back to New Zealand. Ha has taken the* xfensive suite of stabing formerly occupied by J Chaafe. and Mr J. Marshall this week placed his Nord3nfoldt— Purjgawerewere filly (full sister to Urackshot) in hia hands.

It transpires that neither Hilda nor Cissy has been mated with Castor. I understand that Major George arid Mr T. Morriu intend journeying to the Dunedin meeting. The steeplechaser Silvio was sold' last week to Mr N. Dickey for £12.

Athletic —James Oonway, of the Ponsonby Football 0 üb. representative half back against Canterbury and Otago in 1888, died suddenly from pulmonary oraplnint on Satudvy.— The entries rfceived for the haLd'rup events of the Championship Athletic meeting are excellent, being :~3oOyds, 29 competitors ; J2Oyda,34; 600yda, 21; 10.0 yds, 21; two-mile bicycle, 9 ; three-mile bicycle. ft-. Cbioket — In the Benior cricket matches United met St. Mary's, the former making 95, H. Gates (58) being the only double figures made. St. Mary's have lost six: wickets for 14. Jn the Gordon v. Auckland matqh the former batted firit for 107, of

I which Moresby made 34 and Lusk 27. Auckland have lost six wickets for 35. In Parnell v. Alpha, Parnell have lost eight wickets for 287 runs, Wm. Gardiner being the principal scorer with a welli played 112. Testro also got 41 (not out), and Q. Walker 84.
