OTAGO RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

The commencement of the annual prizefiring, in connection with the Otago Rifle Association, tookjplace at the Pelichet Bay range on Wednesday. The wind in the morning was choppy, and in the afternoon it was still more unfavourable, while the light was not all that could be desired. The number of competitors this year amount to 43, which is somewhat under the number that was entered last year; and this falling off is due, to a large extent, to the fact tbat only the carbine and Snider rifle is permitted to be used, a great number of those who have been practising with the MartiniHenri having failed to enter. Firing was commenced at 5 a.m. and at 9 a.m., and was kept up till 5 p.m. The conditions of the first match were seven shots at 200, 300, and 500 yards ; for the second match the distances were fixed at 300 and 500 yards ; 10 shots at eaoh range. The firing will be continned to-day and tomorrow. All the arrangements as usual are very satisfactory, and the meeting bids fair to prove very successful, notwithstanding the decrease in the number of competitors. Subjoined is a list of prizetakers yesterday :— Fibst Match.— 2oo, 3.o, and 600 yards ; seven shots.
