THE WEATHER AND THE CROPS.

Kain fell on Tuesday afternoon and night and Wednesday morning throughout Obago, and was exceedingly welcome, though there was scarcely enough to penetrate the ground to any depth. From the following telegrams it will be seen that the want of moisture is felt far more in Canterbury than it is in Obago : — Cheistchubch, December 9.

The weather is extremely hot, and fears are entertained that if there is no rainfall soon the crops in the country districts will be ruined. There has been very little rain for two years. Timahu, December 9.

The farmers assembled at the wool sale give deplorable accounts of the state of the crops and pastures in most parts of the district from the drought. The grain crops on the sunny slopes are quite ruined, and a large proportion of the rest will be if there is no rain in a week or two. The pastures are dry as hay and are giving out. The coast country was never so dry since it has been settled. There has been very little rain for two years, and the underground waters are failing. Old swamps are dry and cracked in wide fissures. It threatens to baa disastrous year for the farmers.
