"GENERAL" BOOTH'S SCHEME.
The following is a London despatch, dated November 9 .—Archdeacon Farrar delivered an earnest address this morning at Westminster Abbey in support of the scheme of " Geueral" Booth for tho redemption of, England's povertystriken masses. The announcement that the Archdeacon would speak oy this topic had attracted such a throng of people that after the abbey had been crowded to its utmost capacity, thousands were turned away unable to gain admission. "General" Booth's novel and alluring plan is now one of the chief subjects of public interest. Twenty leading clergymen of Great Britain have signed an appeal to the people to raise the 5,000,000d0l which " General" Booth thinks would be required to successfully carry out the enterprise. Cardinal Manning and most of the Protestant bishops have endorsed the plan ; the Prince of Wales has .written to •' General" Booth, heartily approving of the scheme, which he describes as intelligent, and promising aid ro people whose welfare is near hia heart. But " General " Booth is being met by controversy and criticism as well as approval. Many who agree with him as to the need of the remedial measures believe that help must be through legislation. Mr Booth proposes to apply his panacea without invoking the aid of Parliament.
